Megawati, Prabowo discuss alleged election fraud

Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri and Greater Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party Advisory Board chairman Prabowo Subianto met here on Saturday to discuss alleged fraud in Thursday`s legislative elections.

"Speaking about the legislative elections, I think there was a lot of fraud in their implementation," Praboso said before entering Megawati`s residence on Teuku Umar street, Central Jakarta.

On arrival at Megawati`s residence, Prabowo was greeted by PDI-P Secretary General Pramono Anung who had previously said the meeting with Megawati was intended to build political communication and cooperation after the legislative election, in addition to discussing various problems, including the chaotic handling of permanent voters` lists (DPTs).

"Problematic DPTs were found across the country and therefore it should be clarified before the presidential election is conducted," Anung said, adding that the problem should be immediately dealt with by the government because it suggested that the lists had been manipulated.

He said it should be immediately clarified to allay doubt and suspicion that the DPTs were manipulated by certain quarters.

Because of the suspicion that the DPTs were manipulated, Anung said, adding that the PDI-P would support other political parties and organizations in their intention to file a lawsuit.

"According to Law No.10/2008, such a lawsuit can be filed because the alleged fraud occurred massively or everywhere, and I am certain that PDI-P, Golkar, and other parties will remain quiet about this," Anung said.

But he expressed hope that the lawsuit would not disturb or change the schedule of the presidential election and that the process to form a new government on October 20, 2009 would run as scheduled.
